Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday declared that “achhe din” (good days) have begun for slum-dwellers as her government launched several long-awaited development projects aimed at improving the living conditions in underprivileged areas.
Speaking during the inauguration of infrastructure works in her Shalimar Bagh constituency, CM Gupta said that, unlike previous administrations, the current government was delivering real change for slum communities. “Today, we started the construction of proper drainage in this slum area. After years of neglect, real work is beginning in slums and colonies,” she said.
Slamming past governments for neglecting the poor and using them as mere “vote banks,” she asserted that the BJP-led administration is focused on providing essential services like water, sanitation, parks, and housing to the urban poor. “They tried to create fear among slum-dwellers that the BJP would bulldoze their homes. But today, under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, we are working to uplift every poor household,” she added.
Gupta also announced that Rs 700 crore allocated to the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) will be used exclusively for the welfare of slum residents. As part of the initiative, 52,000 flats constructed a decade ago will finally be renovated and handed over to eligible slum families.
At the event, she also launched new water supply schedules, promising twice-daily water delivery to areas that previously had limited access. “From today, you will get water from 6 to 8 a.m., and again in the evening. This is a small but meaningful change,” she said.
Earlier on Monday, CM Gupta held a high-level review meeting with District Magistrates from all 11 revenue districts to assess local governance, public service delivery, and disaster preparedness. Emphasizing citizen-centric governance, she directed officials to enhance transparency, address grievances promptly, and maintain strict vigilance against corruption—especially in services meant for the economically weaker sections.
“Field inspections must become routine. Cleanliness, waterlogging, traffic issues, and encroachments need urgent and continuous attention,” the CM instructed.
Gupta concluded by reiterating her government’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and stressed the need for accountability in all administrative departments.
